Every two seconds, two bottles of Gato Negro are being served somewhere on the planet to be shared with family and friends, always under the attentive eyes of the arched cat that carefully watches enjoyment of the best moments.
In year 1960, at Viña San Pedro, it became necessary to find a proper name for its wine, a name that would reflect the strength and differentiation they wanted to transmit. It was this need which gathered them every day in long conversations throughout different places in the valley. One of those long days of looking at the valley and the horizon trying to find a sign, the German oenologist who was there at the time, remembered a legend which he described in two words: Schwartze Katze.
Schwartze Katze was an old time legend that existed in a traditional wine growing zone in Germany, by the Mosela River, that told about a special black cat, who, with an arched back, guarded a barrel of wine who a well-known merchant kept in his cellar. It was so that they decided to name the brand that reflected the quality of their wines around the world as Schwartze Katze, Gato Negro in Spanish.
San Pedro had been founded in Chile in 1865, in the zone of Molina, Curicó Valley; originating a long vitivinicultural tradition in the region due to its favorable climatic conditions and privileged soils. In the 60’s, Viña San Pedro was already recognized for the quality of its wines. That’s why, the arrival of Gato Negro ended up confirming it in a time in which bottled wine and its labels were a great novelty in the country.
Gato Negro appeared as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Bordolese red varieties. However, in the 70’s, and in the quest for consolidating the brand even more, GatoBlanco was born, a perfect blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Nowadays, GatoNegro represents a wide range of wines in seven varieties: Cabernet sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Rosé and Malbec.
Gato Negro is currently present in over 80 markets in the five continents. It is one of the largest sold wine-brands worldwide: Gato Negro, is leader in 15 of the markets where it is present.
